A Brief History of BMW E65 E66 E68

The BMW 7 Series is a fantastic line of full size luxury machines designed and manufactured by the German heavy hitter BMW. The E65 in particular is an internal model circulated from 2002 to 2008. It was first shown to the masses at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2001 and was launched further in Europe later that year. However, they took their time and promoted it in the US in 2002. Assembly was spread all over the world, namely Dingolfing in Germany, Rayong in Thailand, and Cairo in Egypt and Toluca in Mexico. This model proved to be very controversial because of its unorthodox styling and iDrive difficulties. Irrespective, it went on to become the best-selling & Series ever, mostly after its E66 2006 alterations.

The E65, E66, E67 and E68 are the fourth generation of the five generations of 7 Series and were designed, primarily, as replacements for the E38. The E65 was the designation for the short wheel base design and the E66 is the long wheel base design. The E67 is a bulletproof version with security in mind and finally, the E 68 is the hydrogen version. It’s obvious that all these versions traditionally introduce various technologies and exterior themes before they trickle down to smaller vehicles in BMW’s vast line up.

There were initial functional issues with the iDrive systems, which consist of a video screen in the dashboard and a controller on the center console, used as a computer mouse. This elevated the E65 and its brethren to higher status, known as the new era of BMW. iDrive uses a system of eight menus to control the vehicles climate, audio, navigation, communication and suspension settings. However, it has been criticized by many an automotive review as being too complicated and not intuitive enough.

The E65/E66 were the only BMW cars that are available with the top of the line engines, which are 6.0 liter V12 petrol and 4.4 liter V8 turbo diesel and badged as the 760i/Li and 745d, respectively. And this V8 turbo diesel engine has 325 horsepower with 242kW and 750 Nm torque with a top speed of 250 km/h or speed of 155 mph. The V12 gasoline engine has 438 horsepower with 327kW and 600Nm torque with a top speed as same as in the version 8 with 250 km/h.

Despite major complications and problems along the way, the E65 has proven itself against competitors and emerges victorious.
